Fig cultivation in Anatolia goes back as far as agriculture itself and is among the oldest of the cultivated fruits. The fig is native to Anatolia and spread from there through Syria and Palestine, and later the wider Middle East, to China and India.
Figs are grown commercially in a small number of countries, and fewer still produce dried figs. Türkiye leads the world in both fresh and dried fig production and export. The Aegean region, above all Aydın and İzmir, is the most important growing area, known for the "Sarılop" variety, which suits both fresh consumption and drying.
The controlling issue in this trade is aflatoxin. Dried figs are among the products the European Union subjects to increased import controls, and consignments are tested on arrival. Ask the supplier for lot-level aflatoxin analysis from an accredited laboratory and establish how lots are sorted; reputable packers use UV sorting to remove contaminated fruit before shipment.
Moisture content and grading by count per kilo belong in the same contract, agreed before loading rather than argued after arrival.
